Immediately the man walked into the boutique, Aanu quickly covered the food she was eating and jumped to her feet.
“Good afternoon Sir.” She said with a smile.
“Good afternoon.” The man replied.
He looked around the shop.
“This place has really changed o. Where is madam?”
“She has gone out Sir.”
The man settled into a chair.
“I need a shoe. Something I can wear with jeans. Size 45
She quickly brought out three shoes that she deemed appropriate. The man checked the shoes and said he said he did not like them. She persuaded him to try it on and he would see the fitting. She stood back so he would take his shoes off. He looked at her.
“Ahan. Why are you standing there? Bend down and take my shoes off.”
Aanu smiled, took off his shoes and put the new ones on for him. After trying the 3, he stayed confused on what to pick. A woman came into the shop.
“Honey what is taking so long now? Just pick a shoe and let’s go. We are late already.”
“I’m sorry. I just don’t know which to pick. Which one do you like?”
“That brown one. I like it.”
Aanu, eager to make a sale, jumped in to further convince the man.
“Mummy good afternoon ma. Thank God you said so too o. that’s the same thing I’ve been telling daddy. This shoe looks very good on him.”
The woman ignored Aanu and kept talking to her husband. She convinced him to take the brown shoe and when he was about to pay, she eyed Aanu.
“Hey! Is your POS working?”
“Yes it is ma.”
She turned to her husband.Honey, pay with your card. Don’t give her cash.” She gave Aanu a meaningful look.
Aanu unplugged the POS from its charger and inserted the ATM card. While she was operating it, she asked the man to punch in his pin. The woman reacted.
“Wait, how much did you punch in? Did you put the correct amount? In fact cancel it and start all over.”
Aanu was shocked.
“I put in the amount we agreed on. I did not put in the wrong amount. I have no reason to do that.”
“Why are you arguing with me? Honey see this girl o.”
The husband kept mute.
“Ma, please just put in the pin. If I did put in the wrong amount, you would get an alert immediately.”
“Are you still arguing with me?!”
Aanu did as the woman wanted and the transaction was complete. She packed the shoes in a bag and made to give it to the man. The wife eyed her.
“You this girl, don’t you have any sense? So you cannot carry it after us to the car? Such insolence from a Common sales girl.”
Aanu sighed.
“I’m sorry ma.”
She followed them to the car and dropped the shoe. She smiled and thanked them for their patronage. She went back into the shop and fell heavily into her chair. Her younger cousin who was just arriving from home walked in at that moment. She noticed Aanu’s countenance and expressed concern. Aanu relayed what happened to her. Her cousin burst into laughter.
“Aanu sorry o. shey I told you people do that to me too. The moment you tell them ‘madam’ is your sister, you would see the transformation in their behaviour. They will now start saying ah! I did not know o. I can see the resemblance sef. Aanu you are gentle. You should have told them you are a master’s degree holder with a first class in fact.”
“I don’t need to boast jare. Let their pride kill them. I don’t blame them now, I blame this country.”
“Aanu, I did not tell you about the one I experienced last Saturday. A woman that came to buy something with her children. I was already angry because the woman’s children were talking to me rudely. Then when the woman started bargaining. I was telling her to pay N2500 for a shirt, then she said she would pay N2000 else she would drop it. I was still trying to convince her. I was like mummy, please buy it. I cannot because of N500 lie to you. If it goes for 2000 I would sell it. She replied that who says you can’t lie? You sales girls that would be stealing things. Because you want to gain money, you would be lying, I know your type. Mtchew. If yo’re not selling let me know. I told her I could not go lower than that price, so she left. She later came back to buy the shirt. People are funny. When people like that find out that I am ‘madam’s’ daughter their attitude changes. And if they find out that I am a university graduate, they go soft.”
“I don’t understand that kind of pride. Even I were a sales girl, should I be treated like less a person? What if I don’t have a master’s degree? People are funny.”
“Aanu don’t stress yourself. We all know you are a common sales girl.”
Aanu made to slap her cousin who dodged it and they played around the shop till another customer came in.
