Army kills 10 insurgents, rescue woman, baby

The Nigerian Army has killed 10 Boko Haram insurgents and rescued a woman with her baby in Borno State. The Army Public Relations Director, Sani Usman, in a statement issued on Saturday, said two insurgents, who were also captured alive, were being interrogated.

Troops of 3 Battalion, 22 Task Force Brigade, on June 10, 2016, based on information received that Boko Haram terrorists earlier dislodged at Chukungudu and Hausari villages during a recent clearance operation were migrating towards Muska village in Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area, conducted fighting patrol operations in the general area.The terrorists were killed at a village in Gamboru Local Government Area of the state.

“During the encounter, the troops killed 10 Boko Haram members, captured two alive and rescued a woman with her baby that were held hostage by the terrorists,” the statement said.

The troops said it also recovered several equipment and arms, including six AK-47 rifle magazines, 56 rounds of 7.62m (special) ammunition, one bundle of detonating cord and a manual on how to prepare Improvised Explosive Devices.

Other items recovered were two rifle magazine pouches, a Techno tablet, a Nokia mobile phone, one Gionee mobile phone, six SIM cards, three memory cards, one Airtel modem, a wristwatch, two Islamic books and two motorcycles.

The rescued woman and her child, according to the statement, are receiving “necessary attention, pending relocation to a camp for Internally Displaced Persons.

The statement added that another section of the battalion conducted another fighting patrol to Wumbi village, based on information received that there were insurgents in the area.

“The patrol team recovered 157 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 37 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition,” the army said.

In a related development, troops of 22 Brigade Garrison intercepted 15 male internally displaced persons on their way from Mudu Kasa village to Dikwa.

“They revealed that some Boko Haram terrorists occasionally visit and terrorise their village and forcefully collect food and valuables. They further alleged that the terrorists came in numbers with some of them holding AK-47 rifles, while others wield machetes.

“As part of the troops’ mandate of facilitating humanitarian assistance by both governmental  and non-governmental organisations to the IDPs, the troops also provided security to the International Committee of the Red Cross same day. They troops would continue to provide the needed security to facilitate humanitarian assistance and activities in the area,” the Army said
